What is window film?
In their simplest forms, window films are composed of a polyester substrate to which a scratch resistant coating is applied on one side; a mounting adhesive layer and a protective release liner is applied to the other side. When the release liner is removed, that side of the film with the adhesive is applied to the interior surface of the glass. Depending on the film type, there may also be metalized and dyed laminates.
How do films work?
Window films are installed on the interior side of the window, and reduce the amount of solar energy (UV radiation, visible light and infra-red heat) entering the room by increasing the solar reflection and solar absorption of the glass. SolarZone films thus reduce heat gain by up to 85%, block UV radiation by up to 99.8%, and moderate the amount of visible light and glare entering the room.
How long will the film last?
In general, most solar films are replaced not because they stop working, but because of surface damage. SolarZone's tough scratch resistant coating helps to protect the film from day-to-day wear and tear. However, the life of the film will be extended with careful cleaning, using mild soap and water and a soft cloth. The effective life of window film will vary by the type of film, type of glass, window construction, compass orientation of glass, and in which part of the world the building is located. There are documented cases of film lasting 12 to 22 years or more in some instances. This should not, however, be assumed to be the normal expected life.
What savings can be made by using solarzone window films?
Industry studies predict a return on investment through energy savings within 3-5 years. It is estimated that every 100 sq. ft. of window film can reduce the air conditioning load of a building by as much as 12,000 BTUs or one ton of heat. Because the issue is really summer heat gain, the most dramatic savings occur in hot climates. However, during the winter, when the temperatures are lower outside than inside the room, SolarZone film can help prevent heat loss by lowering the emissivity of the glass, reducing the absorption of the room heat into the glass, and reflecting the heat back into the room, lowering heating costs.
Can you install solar zone film on a yacht, trailer or bus?
Yes. We have films suitable for almost any application, so we can tint the windows of boat, caravan or tractor. In fact, we can apply film to almost any glass or acrylic surface in any building or vehicle.
How long does window film take to dry?
Like all products that use adhesive, the adhesive must cure to achieve a proper bond to the glass. Once the adhesive has cured, your windows will look very much as thought they have been factory-tinted. You may see some changes in the appearance of the film while it is curing. Change are normal at this time.
Although the film appears perfect at first, you may see it become hazy and milky, or develop an “orange peel affect” or even large bubbles. This is quite normal, and should not cause alarm. After curing, these apparent imperfections will disappear. Curing takes from 3 to 30 days, depending on the weather, humidity and the amount of sunlight falling on the glass. As you would expect, curing tends to be faster in summer and slower in winter. Above all, do not touch the film until curing is complete.
